The obvious commonality among all bivalves is that they have two shells joined together by strong ligaments. The side with the ligaments we call the dorsal margin in contrast to the ventral margin. They may be attached to a solid surface, hidden under rocks or in crevices or buried in mud or sand.

The favorite food is usually hydroids, bryozoans and sponges.
