Distribution: The American plaice prefers soft sand or muddy substrate. It is is said to approach diveable depths during the summer I have observed on 15 meters on the middle of the winter in the Trondheim fjord.

Characteristics: A special feature of this right eyed flounder is the big mouth. The body is slender and the color is usually light red or brown. It is quite small, reaching a length of no more than 50 cm.
