Distribution: The sand goby prefers sandy or muddy substrate. It is most common from the tidal zone and down to 20 meters. There have been observations of the sand goby as deep as 60-70 meters.
Characteristics: The slender body can reach a length of no more than 10 cm. The color is grey or brown with darker markings. Adults have a blue spot on the first dorsal fin. The first and second dorsal fins are slightly separated. It has scales on the neck and throat, in contrast to P. norvegicus.
