Distribution: The poor-cod is very common along the entire Norwegian coast, as far north as Nordland. It usually appears in small shoals on depths between 10 and 300 meters. Divers often encounter younger individuals which seem to prefer shallow water.

Characteristics: This is a small gadoid. The length rarely exceeds 20 cm. The color is reddish brown. It has three dorsal fins. The first has a short base and a upright shape. As with all other gadoids, the ventral fin is in front of the breast fin. The lateral line starts just behind the first dorsal fin and is curved down to the centerline.
