Distribution: The cod is very common along the entire Norwegian coast. Genetic studies show that local populations exist in many fjords, not interacting much with populations living in the open sea.

Characteristics: The cod is easily recognized by the big head, long and slim body, the beard and the overshot jaw. The lateral line is curved. Most cods have brown spots all over the body, but colors may vary, depending on habitat and feed. Large cods may reach a length of 1.8 meters and a weight of 60 kg.
