Distribution: This tiny barnacle is usually seen sitting in hydroids or rocks on current exposed locations deeper than 40 meters. It can be found anywhere along the Norwegian coastline.

Characteristics: With the distinct shape of the body, this species can only be confused with Pollicipes pollicipes. The most obvious difference is the number of shell plates. S. scalpellum has 13 or sometimes 14 plates while P. pollicipes has more. The tail has transverse rows of small plates. The total body length may reach 4 cm.
