Distribution: S. mertensi prefers arctic conditions. It can be seen in spring or early summer anywhere along the Norwegian coast.
Characteristics: It can grow to a diameter of 30 cm. It swims with rhythmic motions and could be confused with Aurelia aurita, if it was not for the distinct cross covering almost the entire diameter.
