Characteristics:

These species has long, slender bodies. The length of fully grown individuals ranges from 5 cm (the one-jawed eel, Monognathus ahlstromi) to 4 meters (the slender giant moray, Strophidon sathete). All eels lack ventral fins and most of them do not have breast fins either.

Taxonomy:

There approximately 800 species of eel, organized in 20 families, worldwide. Only two species are likely to be encountered while scuba diving in Norwegian waters, the European conger and the European eel.
