The sharks and rays have no swim bladder. In contrast to the members of Holocephali, another class of cartilaginous fish, the sharks and rays have more than one pair of gills. A rigid dorsal fin and several series of teeth are other common features.
Elasmobranchii is organized in two infraclasses:
- Rays and skates are members of Batoidea.
- The sharks are all included in Selachii.
