Characteristics:

This is a small gadoid. The length rarely exceeds 20 cm. The color is reddish brown. It has three dorsal fins. The first has a short base and a upright shape. As with all other gadoids, the ventral fin is in front of the breast fin. The lateral line starts just behind the first dorsal fin and is curved down towards the centerline.

Habitat:

Young fish are sometimes abundant in along the shores, but this is actually an oceanic species. It is most frequent in open water on depth ranges from 30 to 300 meters.

Distribution:

It can be found in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, from Nordland (Norway) to Morocco and Gibraltar, including western parts of the Mediterranean.
