Rosy Starfish - Stichastrella rosea

Characteristics:

This is a five-armed starfish with a small central disk. The arms are long and cylindrical. The coloration is usually orange, but yellow or almost red individuals exist. It can grow to a diameter of 15 cm. There are longitudinal, although not very distinct, rows of papulae (gill-like respiratory organs) along the arms.

Habitat:

It can be found both on hard and sandy substrate, from the subtidal zone to 400 meters.

Distribution:

This starfish is recorded from both the northern Pacific and Atlantic Ocean.
