Characteristics:

This is a five-armed starfish. but does not have the same spiny texture. The coloration is usually orange, but yellow or almost red individuals exist. It can grow to a diameter of 15 cm. Longitudinal, although not very distinct, rows of papulae (gill-like respiratory organs) along the arms.

Habitat:

It seems to prefer sandy substrate, from the subtidal zone to 400 metres.

Distribution:

This starfish is recorded from both the northern Pacific and Atlantic Ocean.
