The shell is thin and fragile and does not exceed a diameter of 19 mm. The color is usually white, pink or reddish brown, often in a very irregular pattern. There are a large number of fine radial ridges. In contrast to the similar Palliolum tigerinum, it has fine spines on the ridges, especially towards the shell margins.
It prefers locations with sand or gravel on any depth from 10 to several hundred meters.
It is widespread in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, from Iceland to the western Mediterranean.
