G. lacunosa forms a somewhat flattened, spherical structure of fine white or off-white tubes. A look in a microscope reveals that the tube walls are smooth. The diameter of the entire sponge is less than 3 cm. It is attached to the substrate by a thin stalk.
G. lacunosa prefers hard substrate and is often seen on steep, rocky slopes. It is most common on relatively shallow depths, down to 200 meters.
It is well known in the East Atlantic, from the Mediterranean in the South, to the Arctic in the north.
