• Norwegian: -

Characteristics:

This chiton may reach a length of 19 mm. The color is variable. Light brown is perhaps most frequent along the coast of Norway, but red, yellow or green variants exist as well. It may be confused with the grey chiton, Lepidochitona cinerea. Good close-ups may reveal that the mantle of L. cinerea has very fine granulation while the mantle of L. asellus is covered by rectangular shells.

Habitat:

It can be found on any depth down, to 250 meters, in contrast to the grey chiton which are usually found in the sublittoral zone. It thrives on rocky locations like most other chitons.

Distribution:

It is widespread in the North Atlantic Ocean.
