• Norwegian: grå skallus

Characteristics:

The length of the oval shell is approximately 1,5 times the width and does not exceed 2,5 cm. The color is variable. Light brown is perhaps most frequent, but red, yellow or green variants exist as well. Can be confused with L. asellus. Good close-ups may reveal that the mantle of the grey chiton has very fine granulation while the mantle of Leptochiton asellus is covered by fine, rectangular shells.

Habitat:

It is most frequent on middle to lower shore and on shallow subtidal depths. It thrives on rocky locations like most other chitons.

Distribution:

It is widespread in the North-East Atlantic Ocean.
